RGB
The additive primary colors, red, green and blue, used to display color in video monitors. Printing with a file in RGB color mode will produce a washed out appearance. EKD does not use RGB for printing it is stricktly used for web graphics.
PMS - Pantone Matching System
A registered name for an ink color matching system used to compare, match and identify specific colors. To do so we use a pantone book. It contains pantone colors with their closest CMYK values. We use Pantone colors for invoices and screen printing here at EKD.

100lb Gloss Book
A thicker weight of "text" or "book" weight paper commonly used for flyers, brochures and the insides of catalogs. "100-lb" refers to how much 500 printer sheets (25" x 38") of this paper weighs. A gloss coating allows this paper to perform better on press for color and detail.
100lb Gloss Cover
A heavier stock of paper than 100lb gloss book. Despite the fact they both share the same "pound" rating, cover weight paper uses smaller printer sheets (20" x 26") than text stock paper (25" x 38") to measure it’s basis weight, thus, cover stock paper is thicker per square area.
Aqueous Coating
It is used to protect and enhance the printed piece. Aqueous coating is applied to all 100lb gloss book and 100lb gloss cover.
AQ Coating is short for "Aqueous Coating." This is a term for a post-production process where a clear coating, in a water base and applied like ink by a printing press, is applied to the entire surface and used to protect and enhance the printing underneath. It provides a light luster to the printed product, speeds up dry times, minimizes finger prints, and adds more scuff protection. Since aqueous coating makes it problematic for postage and inkjet printing to be applied, it is not applied to mailing sides of postcards. |
UV Coating/UV FLood/Full UV
Ultra Violet. The part of the spectrum where the wavelength of light is shorter than the wavelength of visible light. A liquid coating applied to the printed piece, which is then bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. This coating is used to provide a protective coating to the printed image. Please note that you CAN NOT write or imprint on a uv coated jobs.
This is a term for a post-production process where a clear coating, a liquid applied to a printed sheet, is bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. This form of coating is thicker than normal varnishes and provides an attractive, high gloss appearance to the printing. |
Spot UV/Spot Coating
Coating paper only in specific areas as opposed to all over coating. In a Spot UV job the job gets a UV coating in only specific areas and does not get any AQ coating in any other places. Spot UV can be referred to as spot varnish.
Matte/Dull Finish
A coated paper finish that is flat, not shiny like a gloss, but still keeps much of the ink from being absorbed by the paper and produces an excellent image. Matte/ Dull finish is applied to all 14pt jobs and 16pt jobs unless it is Spot UV.
Uncoated
Not coated, you would want to select this if you plan on writing on the stock
Foamcore
Best for 1 time use - it's a delicate material - but if taken care of - can last longer, but does tend to wilt / bend Multi-Use material - depending on it's need or use - typical for placing on easels for presentations, etc. Not waterproof.
Coroplast
Typically used for Yard or Parking signs (e.g. Real Estate, Election, Reserved For, etc.) Depending on it's use - material will have to be oriented appropriately to ensure the flutes are vertical, in the case of utilizing an H-stake with the sign. H-stake is best used on a soft ground environment (dirt/soil/grass, etc.) This product once printed, may show a linear effect due to its' corrugated flute structure. Ink is UV Cured (dried).
Bleed
Printed colors that extend past the edge of a page. To cut the job to its actual size the processor has to make sure the job gets printed with 1/8 of an inch bleed some jobs may require more than that. For example if the job is a business card (3.5" x 2") the file size with bleed would be (3.625" x 2.125").
Die Cut
A specific shape like circle, star, etc (any designs that cannot be done by a straight cut) which is cut by a metal blade. Door hangers are a popular product which requires die cutting.
Folding Options
4-Panel Roll Fold: A type of fold where the piece is folded inward at one end and then folded inward again one or more times. It is as if you are rolling the piece up.
Accordion Fold: A sheet which has been printed on only one side then folded twice in right angles to form a W-shaped four page uncut section. We are able to fold up to 4 panel(8 page max). 5 panel(10 page)+ will be send out to get folded. Accordion folds are usually 100lb book papers. Such as, brochures and catalogue.
|
Double Gate Fold: Single gate fold, with an additional fold on the center.
Double Parallel Fold: A type of fold where the piece is folded in half and then folded in half again. The folds are parallel to each other. Also known as a quarter fold.
French Fold (quarter fold): A sheet which has been printed on one side only and then folded twice at right angles to form a four page uncut section.
Gate Fold: When both sides of an oversize page fold into the gutter in overlapping layers.
Half Fold: Is fold in half.
Half-Tri Fold: A sheet is folded in half and then tri-folded.
Tri Fold: A fold where a three panel piece has both side sections folded inward, one on top of the other each section is approximately 1/3 the length of the piece. Also known as a C-fold or letter-fold.
Z Fold: A paper fold represented by back and forth folds into three panels.
Landscape / Horizontal
Printing a page so that when positioned for reading the width is greater than the height.
Portrait / Vertical
Printing a page so that when positioned for reading the height is greater than the width.
Open End Envelope
An envelope with an opening along its short dimension.
Open Side Envelope
An envelope with an opening along its longest dimension.
Window Envelope
An envelope with a die cut opening that is intended to have information show through from the piece inside the envelope.
Resolution
The measurement of output quality expressed in pixels (dots) per inch on a computer monitor or dots per inch on printed media. For example, a monitor displaying a resolution of 800 by 600 refers to a screen capable of displaying 800 pixels in each of 600 lines, which translates into a total of 480,000 pixels displayed on the screen. When referring to printed media, a 300 dpi (dots per inch) printer for example, is capable of outputting 300 dots in a one-inch line, which means that it has the ability of printing 90,000 distinct dots per square inch (300 x 300).
Template
A preset model that acts as a structure for setting up a similar product. Here at Eye Kandy Designs we have lots of templates for your print materials if you so choose to set up the graphic file yourself and submit to Eye Kandy Designs for printing. Click here for our templates.
Trim
The process of cutting the product to its finished size. The excess that is cut off is also referred to as the trim.
Raster
Artwork such as photos, or flattened artwork (from Adobe Photoshop) are made up of tiny squares (pixels) and depending on your resolution and/or final output size desired, the file could have a low quality end result. Any raster elements you wish to use should have a high enough resolution (DPI) before considering them for your large format product.
Vector
Artwork such as illustrations or clip-art style elements (from Adobe Illustrator) is made with mathematical calculations, and can be scaled up to any size without losing quality. Keep in mind that any effects used in Adobe Illustrator are raster based and have transparency - this greatly adds to file size and you must have correct settings in your "Document Raster Effects Settings" to ensure best output for these effects. If you're doing a photo-quality print on a 36" x 48" poster, and leave the raster effects settings at default 72 DPI - you may see tiny squares in your drop shadows, as opposed to a smooth shadow.
